Surnames is the music project of Liam Anastasia-Murphy. After cutting his teeth on the indie folk scene of Richmond, Virginia, he moved back home to Massachusetts and started Surnames out of his bedroom in 2019. Surnames released two EPs in 2020 and three singles in 2022. These releases still remained in the indie sphere, but started to showcase a burgeoning fascination with electronic production and sampling. While he continued to write and record music, Surnames did not perform live often. 2024 changed all that. Anastasia-Murphy linked up with Matt Rich (guitar/vocals), Pat Dole (bass), Jackson Renda (drums), and his future wife Eva Anastasia-Murphy (vocals/percussion). Surnames 2.0 was born. The songs he had been writing started to take on a new life in rehearsals. As they worked through the material grooves emerged, hooks were discovered and harmonies abounded. Much of 2025 was spent performing and recording these new tracks and we are so excited to share them soon! They are vignettes of past love and loss, stories of a stranger’s hardship told over a Guinness or maybe just some words we thought sounded fun. This first full length album drops in the summer of 2026.
Surnames music has been streamed over a half of a million times across platforms, added to and featured on thousands of playlists (including Spotify’s “Fresh Finds Indie”), and used in a Netflix show.
